Paisley Welcomes the World: A Landmark Moment for the Town’s Tourism Future

On Sunday 13th April, something remarkable happened in Paisley. In what may prove to be a defining moment for the town’s future, 11 international travel trade buyers visited as part of VisitScotland’s prestigious Connect programme—a flagship initiative aimed at introducing Scotland’s top tourism experiences to the global market.

These are the people who decide what international travellers see, where they go, and what destinations become must-visits. And this month, they came to Paisley.

Putting Paisley on the Map

Their journey began in Glasgow, boarding a short rail connection to Paisley to experience just how accessible the town is. They were met at the station by the Paisley Tours team, dressed in branded polos and ready to make an impression. Each guest received a thoughtfully prepared welcome package, including upcoming tour information, contact details, and a miniature bottle of Chivas Regal wrapped in Paisley tartan—generously provided by Houston Kiltmakers. It was a small but meaningful token, emblematic of the warm welcome Paisley extends to all who visit.

The highlight of the visit was a specially curated version of the Paisley Heritage Tour. In a single afternoon, the guests walked through streets boasting over 110 listed buildings, took in the majesty of Paisley Abbey—on the cusp of UNESCO World Heritage status—and heard powerful stories of the town’s royal connections, industrial triumphs, and cultural contributions.

They discovered the town’s layered history: the global impact of the Coats and Clarks textile empires, the legacy of Wallace and Bruce, the heartbreaking tale of Margery Bruce, and the haunting memories of the Renfrewshire Witch Hunt of 1697—Scotland’s last mass execution for witchcraft.

A Town Full of Treasures

The group also explored some of Paisley’s most iconic and beloved venues, including Anchor Mill, Oakshaw, Coats Memorial, Russell Institute, and the Sma’ Shot Cottages. They heard about vibrant local businesses like Ashtree House, Café Fairfull, Bungalow Bar, Il Pescatore, Paisley Pie Co, Roasters, The Thread Mill Museum, and more. At every stop, they saw not just potential—but pride, personality, and passion.

The response? Overwhelmingly positive.

“They were absolutely gushing about how beautiful Paisley is,” said a member of the Paisley Tours team. “It was a proud moment to tell them something we’ve believed for years: Paisley is Scotland’s best-kept secret.”

Now, these buyers will take their experience back to their networks—spreading the word about a town that offers history, hospitality, and heart in equal measure. Visitors will soon have the chance to explore Paisley before it inevitably finds its way onto every major travel itinerary.

The Result of Years of Work

While the moment felt like a breakthrough, it didn’t happen overnight. It was the result of months of planning, coordination with local partners, and over a decade of grassroots work. Paisley Tours began as a passion project—sharing the town’s hidden gems online long before there was any formal platform or support. Today, it’s a registered non-profit social enterprise with a clear mission: to place Paisley front and centre on the tourism map.

Next month marks the official launch of Paisley Tours, with five distinctive walking tours operating out of their new hub at 2 County Place—ideally located next to Paisley First and directly opposite the train station.

A Bright Future for Paisley

Sunday’s event was more than a successful tour. It was validation of Paisley’s potential—and proof that with the right support, it can become a truly global destination.

The sun shone, the streets buzzed, and a renewed sense of optimism was in the air.

“We’re now on the radar of international tour operators,” said the team. “With continued support from the town and beyond, we can make Paisley a bookable, unforgettable experience for travellers from all over the world.”

For those who have followed Paisley Tours from the beginning, this is your moment too. For those just discovering the story—there’s never been a better time to get involved.

Because Paisley isn’t just ready.Paisley is rising.
