A Sparkle Of Salt by Evelyn Hood is a historical novel set in 1931 in the fishing village of Buckie, located on the Moray Firth in Scotland. The story follows the lives of the Lowrie family, who were first introduced in Hood's previous novel, The Shimmer Of The Herring. As the 20th century progresses, the family faces new challenges, with each member dealing with their own struggles.

James Lowrie battles to maintain his steam drifter, the Fidelity, while coping with the fallout from his marriage to Stella. His sister, Bethany, strives for financial independence but finds herself entangled in a conflict over her son, Adam. Bethany hopes for a different future for him, far from the dangers of the fishing industry and family secrets, while James sees Adam as the rightful heir to his fishing legacy. Meanwhile, Adam is caught between pleasing his mother and following in the footsteps of the man he knows as his uncle, with his growing affection for Etta Mulholland adding to the complications.

The novel captures the essence of life in a coastal village, with Hood's attention to historical detail bringing the era to life. It is a tale of family ties, secrets, and the difficult choices faced by each generation.
